Save the Pioneer Press!

Community Statement

We, leaders and residents of St. Paul and the East Metro Area of the Twin Cities, are concerned about the future of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, a highly valued institution here for 155 years.

We do not want the sale of the Pioneer Press to lead to a smaller, less ambitious newspaper.

Without an experienced news-gathering and advertising sales staff, the quality of the newspaper's coverage and effectiveness as an advertising tool would be diminished.

Without vibrant, in-depth reporting of life in St. Paul, the East Metro Area and Western Wisconsin, residents and workers will not be as well-informed or have the information they need to engage fully in civic life.

Without a civic-minded owner, many civic, cultural and charitable groups could lose a major financial supporter.

We encourage all potential new owners of the St. Paul Pioneer Press to preserve its excellence and learn of our community's expectations for its daily newspaper.

"Hello, I grew up in St. Paul and are still hoping to live there again. St. Paul is different from Minneapolis, I like to think it's more civilized with less of an "anything goes" attidude, more proper and well mannered, has it's priorities straight. St. Paul has it's rough spots, but I go there every week almost for the last 10 years and I see these areas are turning towards the better rather than getting worse. I hope the owner's of the Pioneer Press will not just sell to the highest bidder, etc. Quality does matter in the long run. That's what will keep us readers buying the paper, to read if for it's quality, the way we see St. Paul. "

When we haven't been able to find a Pioneer Press in out-state Minnesota on occasion we purchased the Minneapolis Tribune but no longer do it. We go without if we aren't able to find the Pioneer Press. There is very little St. Paul and surrounding suburb information in the Tribune. "Newspaper journalism in the Twin Cities faces an important crossroads with the pending sale of the Pioneer Press. Nationally, we have seen competition sacrificed and journalistic integrity compromised, so a major ownership change naturally raises concern. Minnesotans take their tradition of high-quality news standards seriously, and we will stand proudly with the award-winning Pioneer Press staff in the effort to preserve those standards. As a strong believer in worker ownership of businesses, I think it would be wonderful if newspaper employees could gain a stake in their company."

"The Twin Cities needs both papers. The Pioneer Press is an important voice both for and to the east metro as well as the rest of the metropolitan area. It is a quality newspaper and from news accounts of the sale has been a newspaper that not only provides quality services, but has made a profit for the stock holders. "The Twin Cities is best served by having two high caliber newspapers written predominatly by local writers (not wire services or syndicated columnists). In this era of media consolidation we must recognize how consolidation has hurt our country. We need to preserve as many distinct and independent voices as possible. Our very democracy depends on it! The St. Paul Pioneer Press is a Pulitzer Prize winning paper with many first rate reporters covering business, health care, politics, and general news. "The need for continuing in-depth coverage of life in St. Paul and the East Metro area is self- evident. I, as a resident of Western Wisconsin and longtime PP subscriber, would like to emphasize the continuing need for a newspaper to give conscientous reporting of our area. The Pioneer Press has done this consistently with great care and effectiveness. The Community Columnist program of the PP exemplified this continuing concern. I had the honor of being selected as a Community Columnist in 2000. I was thus able to provide personalized input from the vantage point of Western Wisconsin. We need the Pioneer Press in our lives. "I believe that we need outstanding high quality newspapers in both Minneapolis and Saint Paul. I live in Menomonie, WI and we have a by weekly paper called the Dunn county news and I find it a poor quality paper. It has many one sided stories, that are poorly written. "It is my sincere wish and hope that the sale of the Pioneer Press will be of benefit to the many, many readers who have so enjoyed getting their news from. I cannot even fathom St. Paul being a one-paper town. We here in small town Wisconsin find it critical to have a competitive market from which to get a broad, innovative, critical, and a more "fair and balanced" news source. It is imperative to maintain a modicum of balance in the newspapers. As lately there are too many that tend to favor one side of the political spectrum. Please choose very carefully the buyer of this long in good-standing newspaper, the St. Paul Pioneer Press, to assure that the doorsteps and mailboxes of our homes will continue to welcome this gem. "The Pioneer Press has been part of my life since day one. I have a copy of the paper with my birth announcement in it - and the home I live in now was advertised in the real estate classifieds of that same edition. I read the comics every Sunday while my dad did the crossword puzzle. Still have the front section with news about landing on the moon. Cooled off in the only air-conditioned building at the State Fair, the Pioneer Press building under the entrance to the Grandstand, where you could meet Jerry Fearing or have a printer make you a hat. I learned how to read stock tables from the business section in seventh grade social studies at Mounds Park Junior High. Kept track of all the Johnson and Harding games while away at school. And in a drawer is a clipping of an employment ad from eleven years ago for a job at my hometown paper. And I still work there today.

I'm sure that my story isn't all that unique. The Pioneer Press is an integral part of many lives in the East Metro. I hope it is for many years to come - but with this sale, I am very concerned that new owners might not understand the Harding-Johnson rivalry, why the West Side is actually south of Downtown, what Payne Avenue and Rice Street have meant to their neighborhoods, and the legend of Supermayor. If you value this understanding of the community, I hope you'll let Gary Pruitt of McClatchy know that'd you'd like to see the Pioneer Press sold so that the employees who live in this area have a chance to take ownership of what is their local paper too.
